With their shaggy beards and long, feathery eyebrows, they are often said to look like grumpy old men.

But it seems schnauzers are becoming the hipsters of the dog world.

Their popularity has risen the most out of all dog breeds in Britain – by 47 per cent – compared to 2017, according to statistics detailing how many births were registered with the Kennel Club.

The rise of the schnauzer – whose name means ‘whiskered snout’ – may be partly down to their increasing prevalence on social media. 

For example, one Instagram account, Schnauzer Lovers, has more than 74,000 followers.

The breed also has celebrity owners, including actor Simon Pegg, US rapper 50 Cent and actress Katherine Heigl.

Overall, figures for the first three-quarters of 2018 show seven of the breeds which have risen most in popularity are, like schnauzers, smaller breeds.

The Kennel Club’s Caroline Kisko said smaller dogs ‘can be a good fit for urban life’ but warned that they need just as much exercise and stimulation as larger breeds.
