A Good Person is an upcoming drama film starring Florence Pugh that looks likely to pull at our heartstrings and have us reaching for a box of tissues.

The movie initially stirred up a lot of excitement as it was written, directed, and produced by Florence's ex Zach Braff. The pair were in a relationship at the time of filming, with the 47-year-old Scrubs actor also revealing he had written the movie specifically with Florence, 27, in mind.

What is the plot of A Good Person?

The official synopsis for A Good Person reads: "Allison is a young woman with a wonderful fiancé, a blossoming career, and supportive family and friends. However, her world crumbles in the blink of an eye when she survives an unimaginable tragedy, emerging from recovery with an opioid addiction and unresolved grief. In the following years, she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law that gives her a fighting chance to put her life back together and move forward."

For further context, Florence's character Allison sees her life falling apart as she struggles with guilt after getting involved in a car accident in which two members of her fiancé's family are killed. A year after the accident, Allison is battling an opioid addiction prescribed months earlier to help manage her pain and grief. At the same time, she develops a close yet tumultuous bond with her fiancé's father, with the pair becoming a lifeline for each other.

What inspired A Good Person?

Zack's best friends Nick Cordero and his wife, Amanda Kloots, were his main inspiration. The pair moved into Zack's guesthouse with their new baby shortly before Nick was hospitalised with Covid. Tragically, he passed away just three months later following complications from the virus aged 41.

Speaking to Vogue earlier this year, Zack emotionally said: "Our property became ground zero for Amanda. So many amazing human beings came by, and they'd walk her baby so she could just have an hour of solitude... I really wanted to write about how we as humans, no matter how hard things get, stand back up."

What happened behind the scenes of A Good Person?

Well, first of all, Florence, who also served as producer on the film, wrote and performed her own music for the film. After being inspired by Zack's script for the movie, the actress said she used her own coping mechanisms as motivation to pen songs.

"That's what I do in my life. Whenever I'm going through something, instead of my diary, I write things, I write songs," she told GamesRadar+. "I wrote it, and I was checking in with Zach to check if that was the feeling of her. He loved it and said that he maybe wanted that at the end of the movie."

For her role, Florence also chose to ditch the wig and cut her hair in real life as she told Vogue she "just wanted it to be a dreadful mess".

Meanwhile, Florence and Zach's relationship at the time of filming was also raising a lot of eyebrows due to their twenty-year age difference. Little Women star Florence fiercely defended the relationship on several occasions on social media. They eventually broke up in early 2022 but have remained good friends, with Zack even gushing to Collider last year: "Florence Pugh's performance in the movie, I know I'm biased, but it's the most miraculous thing you will ever see. I'm not overselling it."
